Chapter Thirteen

I stumble through the door as it slams shut behind us and glance around as evening sets in. The day seemed to slip away as I toured with Zendaya. It also appears we have entered some type of magical forest. Flowers bloom everywhere, and many plants glow. The light around us is a faded red, slowly giving way to black, but the garden remains bright.

Zendaya leads me down a winding path toward a bench that overlooks a small pond with fish and a giant field. There’s training equipment set up in the area, and I glance at Zendaya as she smiles.

“You’re not the only one who trains frequently. This will always be a safe place for you, Ember. Remember that,” she says and pulls me to the bench.

“Should I worry about being safe? Does Prospero harm me?” I feel fear begin to sprout in my stomach.

“He hasn’t, but I don’t trust him at times. I think you’ll understand why I’m telling this to you in time. Your memories will slowly begin to return. You have a place in our world here. You just haven’t found it yet, but you will.”

“Okay, why are you being so cryptic? Are you always like this?”

She laughs. “I guess so. Do you like this garden?”

“It’s very pretty and unique. I don’t know what any of these plants are.”

“That’s not surprising, not only because of your memory loss but also because these plants were grown to thrive in the underworld or, as others call it, Hell. Persephone created this garden for Greed as a gift for his hospitality.”

“Oh, like from Greek mythology?” I ask and wonder how I remember that.

“Yes, exactly. You’re remembering things, good. Prospero tried to start something with her while she was here, but she refused him and he, in turn, doesn’t like the garden she left behind. He has tried to destroy it many times, but whatever magic she used lingers. Everything grows back every time. So, I thought it would be a great place to train, and so did Ulric.”

“Who is that?”

“You’ll meet him again in time. You, too, will enjoy training here. It’s always peaceful, and no one bothers me when I’m here. If you want to meditate, it’s excellent for that. Anyway, enough about that, how about I share some stories with you while we wait to attend dinner? It’ll help calm my nerves. My father puts me on edge quite often.”

“Sure,” I respond with a smile.

Zendaya starts by telling me about her childhood. She didn’t know she was Greed’s daughter for a long time until he came for her with a group of men. Someone had reported a young angel child with amazing magic in a small town full of water demons on the outskirts of Hell. Apparently, angel wings aren’t common for all demons in Hell.

Greed hauled her back to the castle and cut her off from her people for a long time. She was trained to fight, using many different techniques. She even had a fling with a hellhound which led to her daughter.
